Seeing differently: my first century

It’s quite a few (6? 7?) years since I first became aware of and began reading blogs, via a chance find of a copy of Jane Brocket’s lovely book ‘The Gentle Art of Domesticity’ one day in a Bath shop.  I was looking for something nice to send a good friend who was off work ill for quite a while, and hoped the book might cheer her up, or at least distract her.

In fact I had to go back to the shop and buy another copy to send her, because I ended up reading and then keeping it myself.

From then on, reading blogs has been part of my life.  Through blogs, I have learnt so much about lives and ideas in all sorts of places I will never visit, from all sorts of people I will never meet.

I’ve watched them come and go, I’ve watched them develop and grow, I’ve seen them reach their limit and change.  It’s been an education.

I’ve (re)learnt to quilt.  I’ve learnt to crochet confidently.  I’ve read things that have made me laugh, made me think, made me question, made me reflect, made me sad, and sometimes made me wonder if they’re true.

I’ve read books I wouldn’t otherwise have known about, I’ve had ideas I wouldn’t have thought of, I’ve been inspired to grow and cook and make things.

I’ve enjoyed the words, the pictures, the colours.

It’s about three years since I first thought about writing my own blog. For two of those years I played around in my head with what I might write about.  Malcolm constantly encouraged and nagged nudged me to make a start.

It’s almost two years since I was finally persuaded by said good friend and Malcolm to have an i-phone – bought by Malcolm for me for my 58th birthday.

My first i-phone photo

It’s a long, long time since Malcolm first began trying to interest me in taking my own photographs, and many years of his nudging and nagging encouraging me to actually get on and do it (“the best camera to have is the one you have with you” – not his original idea, but no less true for that).

It’s just a few days over a year since I set up this blog and hit the ‘publish’ button for my first post.

This is my 100th post.  I can hardly believe it.

I’ve enjoyed writing this blog more than I could ever have imagined.  I’ve enjoyed taking photographs for it much much more than I could ever have imagined.

I’ve enjoyed learning how to write and use and do things on a blog.  I’ve enjoyed learning little by little to take better photographs.  I’ve enjoyed meeting people (both in this virtual world and in the real world) through my blog.

I’ve enjoyed exploring new themes and ideas, and revisiting some old ideas.

My blog has helped me to ‘see differently’.

I plan to carry on learning, and trying out, and reading and writing.  And all those lovely ‘ing’ words.  I hope I can make it worth your while to come along with me.  And maybe, just maybe, you might find just the thing that inspires you to ‘see differently’.  I do hope so.

Thank you so very much for reading, and for ‘liking’, and for commenting, and for coming back for more.  I can’t begin to tell you how much that means to me, truly.  I am very, very grateful to you.*

  • and most especially to you Malcolm, on this our 37th wedding anniversary. You’ve definitely helped me to ‘see differently’, and it’s been a great adventure.

About deborah @ the magic jug

Now I've passed 60 I'm still doing all sorts of things I haven't done before, as well as carrying on with the things I already love. I live a happy life with my long term love Malcolm. In my blog I explore local and low tech ideas, food, growing, making, reading, thinking, walking, and lots of other words ending in 'ing'.

This is such a lovely post Deborah. Blogging has been a complete revelation to me and introduced me to a wonderful world of blogs. I love reading yours. Here’s to hundreds more. Congratulations for your anniversary. Sam xx

    • Thanks Sam, the feeling’s mutual!
Blogging really is amazing isn’t it (provided you side-step the rubbish that’s out there – both in terms of content and comment).
I dipped my toe in the water really nervously, and a year later am completely immersed.

  2. Love this post and would have to say you’ve summed up very well why I started to blog (it was Jane Brocket and Alicia Paulson who tempted me into the water), and still continue after eight years. (Haven’t acquired a mobile of any description yet, though!) Happy birthday to ‘the magic jug’ and happy anniversary, too.

    • Hi Liz, thank you so much for this. Yes, I read Alicia Paulson’s blog too, and in particular, I know from reading her blog that she has faced and overcome some really difficult challenges in life, which I have found inspiring to read about.
We’re having a lovely anniversary thanks. I’ll drop by and visit you soon!

Congratulations, Deborah, on both counts: your 37th wedding anniversary, and your 100th post. I love reading your blog 🙂

(And now I’m off to see about this book you mentioned, The Gentle Art of Domesticity … )

    • Thanks Marian. Do have a look at Jane Brocket’s blog, Yarnstorm Press – there’s a link from my blog. I think you might also find that archives of her original blog (on which the book was based) are still available – Yarnstorm blog – worth reading (she writes well, backed up by knowledge and wit).
We’re having a lovely day today, and at the moment Malcolm is in the process of (I hope!) solving what seemed like an intractable problem for one of our sons – here’s hoping, that really would be the icing on the cake!

Congratulations on your century and wedding anniversary. I started out as a reader of Jane Brockett, Amanda Soule, Sue at the Quince Tree, Alicia, Lucy at the Attic, Anna at Pleasantview Schoolhouse, Alicewell before her third blog incarnation, All the Bright Day, Leo at Zen Habits and many other old timers. I’m so grateful to them for introducing me to this world. I will now go and look through the unfamiliar names on your blog list.

Isn’t it lovely when you find a new blog that is interesting. I hadn’t realised that Alice had started another blog, I’ve just popped over there and it looks like one I’ll enjoy reading – thanks for the signpost! Also Pleasantview Schoolhouse is a new one to me, looks interesting too.

Glad you’re enjoying it so much. I think we started blogging about the same time but I haven’t made it to 100 yet. It does bring surprising benefits.

Of course you have two young assistants, whereas I’m at a very different stage in my life, and have much more free time than I’ve ever had before. That too has its benefits. I’m enjoying reading your posts – quality rather than quantity!

I have just found your blog via the comment you left on Claire’s Just a little less blog. I can’t wait to go through your archives! Another brilliant blog for my favourites list. Thank you. Penny L

I love to read your comments. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and I don't mind if you don't. However, I ask you to respect the 'circle time' rules made by my son's primary school teacher: make a comment, ask a question or say something nice. Thank you!
